The Tata Sierra is back. After more than two decades away, one of India’s most iconic SUV nameplates has returned in a completely new avatar, and it has not come quietly. Launched on 25 November 2025, the second-generation Tata Sierra enters the hotly contested midsize SUV segment with three engine options, a 5-star Bharat NCAP safety rating, and a design that nods to the original while looking very much of today. With prices starting at Rs 11.49 lakh ex-showroom and going up to Rs 21.29 lakh, the Sierra is positioned right in the heart of a segment that includes the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, and Honda Elevate.

Bookings crossed 70,000 units on the very first day order books opened, which is not a small number. The Sierra clearly means a lot to people who grew up watching the original on Indian roads. But nostalgia only takes a car so far. The real question is whether the new Sierra holds up on its own merits, without the emotional baggage.

Tata Sierra Design: The Old Soul In A New Body

The original Sierra was known for one thing above everything else: that massive rear alpine window and the boxy three-door silhouette. Tata has carried that spirit forward in a very deliberate way. The new Sierra keeps the high-set bonnet, the squared-off wheel arches, the thick B-pillar, and the signature kink in the window line. At the rear, the fixed panoramic glass section is still there, just modernised. Slim LED tail lamps wrap across the tailgate, and the overall rear end looks clean without trying too hard.

Up front, LED light bars tie in with the current design language Tata has established across its SUV lineup. Flush door handles, a well-defined shoulder line, and three wheel size options across variants, ranging from 17-inch units on base models to 19-inch alloys on the top trim, complete the picture. The six colour options include Coorg Clouds, Pristine White, Pure Grey, Bengal Rouge, Munnar Mist, and Andaman Adventure. There is no spare wheel mounted at the back, which keeps the rear profile clean and modern.

The Sierra rides on a new platform called ARGOS, which Tata has confirmed is capable of supporting all-wheel drive. That option has not been launched yet, but Tata has said it is actively under consideration depending on demand.


Tata Sierra Interior: Triple Screens And A Lot More

Step inside and the Sierra makes an immediate impression. The dashboard is dominated by a triple-screen layout, which is a first in this segment. Two 12.3-inch displays flank a 10.5-inch driver instrument screen. The central console gets a JBL soundbar, and the audio setup is a 12-speaker JBL Black system with Dolby Atmos, Logic7 surround sound, and a Sonic Shaft soundbar for clearer vocal reproduction.

The feature list on top variants is genuinely comprehensive. It includes a 6-way power-adjustable driver seat with memory function, ventilated front seats, a thigh-support extender, adjustable armrest, head-up display, panoramic sunroof, eight ambient lighting themes, Boss Mode for the front passenger, three relax modes, multiple terrain mode options, an electric boot with gesture control, and a 360-degree camera. That is a serious list for a car priced under Rs 22 lakh.

Boot space comes in at 622 litres, which is about 52 per cent higher than the segment average of 411.5 litres. Rear legroom and headroom are genuinely usable for taller adults, which is where a lot of midsize SUVs fall short. The Sierra is a 5-seater, and for now, there is no 7-seater variant on sale.


Tata Sierra Engine Options: Petrol, Turbo-Petrol, And Diesel

The 2026 Tata Sierra is offered with three engine choices, which gives buyers a fair amount of flexibility depending on their daily use pattern.

The base engine is a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol unit producing 106 PS and 145 Nm of torque. It is paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. This engine is aimed squarely at urban buyers who want decent mileage and low running costs, with an ARAI-claimed figure of around 17.4 kmpl.

The more interesting engine is Tata’s new Hyperion 1.5-litre turbocharged direct-injection petrol unit, producing 157 bhp and 255 Nm of torque. This one comes exclusively with a 6-speed Aisin torque converter automatic. The Hyperion is a brand-new engine for Tata and marks the company’s first foray into direct-injection turbo-petrol territory. On paper, it is the strongest petrol option in this segment at this price point.

Then there is the 1.5-litre diesel, which produces 118 PS and 260 to 280 Nm of torque depending on whether you pick the manual or the automatic. Diesel bookings reportedly account for 55 per cent of total orders, which says something about Indian buyers and their preference for diesel on longer runs. The diesel variants return between 19.22 and 21.26 kmpl as per ARAI figures, and the real-world number hovers around 17 kmpl based on early user reports.

Notably, the Sierra’s diesel engine does not require DEF fluid or AdBlue, which is a practical advantage for buyers outside metro cities where AdBlue availability can be inconsistent.


Tata Sierra Safety: 5-Star Bharat NCAP

The Sierra received a perfect 5-star Bharat NCAP rating for both adult and child occupant protection, which puts it among the safest cars currently sold in India in this price range. The standard safety kit includes 6 airbags, Level 2 ADAS, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, traction control, hill hold assist, hill descent control, electronic parking brake with auto hold, front and rear parking sensors, and a 360-degree camera on higher variants.

The ADAS suite covers features like lane departure warning, autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and forward collision warning, which is the level of safety tech you would normally expect from cars priced significantly higher.

Tata delivered 10,000 units of the Sierra by 3 March 2026, with deliveries beginning on 15 January 2026. The early reception from owners has been strong, particularly around ride quality and cabin refinement.

Tata Sierra Price: Variants And On-Road Costs

The ex-showroom prices of the 2026 Tata Sierra start from Rs 11.49 lakh for the base Smart Plus variant with the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and 6-speed manual, going up to Rs 21.29 lakh for the top Accomplished Plus variant with the 1.5-litre turbo diesel automatic. On-road prices in major cities range from approximately Rs 13.37 lakh to Rs 25.28 lakh depending on the variant and city.

The Sierra is sold in 24 variants in total, which is a wide spread. The sweet spot for most buyers will likely be the mid-range turbo-petrol or diesel variants in the Rs 16 to 19 lakh ex-showroom range, where the feature list gets genuinely premium without pushing the on-road price into territory where the Tata Safari starts to make more sense.

The Sierra EV is expected to arrive in the latter half of 2026, which will add another dimension to the lineup for buyers specifically looking for electric options.
