India’s passenger vehicle market had its best-ever April on record. According to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations, carmakers retailed 4,07,335 units in April 2026, recording the highest-ever April sales and a 12.21 per cent year-on-year increase. Six of the top 10 spots went to Maruti Suzuki. A sedan finished first overall. And the Hyundai Creta, which has spent years as India’s default midsize SUV, slipped despite still being the segment leader. April 2026 had some genuinely interesting stories buried inside the numbers.

1. Maruti Suzuki Dzire – 23,580 Units, Up 39 Per Cent YoY

The Dzire finishing at number one is the headline story of April 2026, and it deserves to be treated as one. The Dzire emerged as India’s bestselling passenger vehicle in April 2026, recording sales of 23,580 units, up 39 per cent YoY from 16,996 units. Strong fleet demand, fuel efficiency, and a well-balanced ride and handling setup continue to support the compact sedan’s volumes.

The Dzire runs a 1.2-litre three-cylinder Z12E petrol engine returning up to 25.71 kmpl on petrol and 33.73 km per kg on CNG. It rivals the Hyundai Aura, Honda Amaze, and Tata Tigor, and is priced between Rs 6.26 lakh and Rs 9.31 lakh ex-showroom. At those running costs and that price, the fleet operator math is very straightforward, which is why cab aggregators and taxi operators continue to buy the Dzire in bulk month after month.

2. Tata Punch – 19,107 Units, Up 53 Per Cent YoY

The Tata Punch recorded 19,107 units in April 2026, growing 53 per cent YoY and ranked second in the national list. The 53 per cent growth figure is the highest YoY growth rate among the top five cars nationally for the month, and it reflects the Punch’s expanding appeal across both the petrol, CNG, and electric buyer base.

Ease of driving, compact dimensions, and sorted ride and handling balance continue to draw buyers, although higher variants are priced at a premium. The Punch rivals the Hyundai Exter and Citroen C3 and is priced from Rs 6 lakh to Rs 14.44 lakh. The Punch EV’s contribution within the combined tally is also worth noting, as Tata reports petrol and EV Punch numbers together.

3. Maruti Suzuki Ertiga – 19,063 Units, Up 21 Per Cent YoY

The Ertiga finished third nationally and retained its title as India’s best-selling MPV for April 2026. It posted sales of 19,063 units, up 21 per cent YoY. Its practical cabin, strong fuel efficiency, and value-for-money positioning continue to attract both private and fleet buyers, though it misses out on some features offered by rivals. Priced from Rs 8.80 lakh to Rs 13.26 lakh, the Ertiga competes against the Kia Carens and Toyota Rumion.

The margin between the Punch and the Ertiga was just 44 units, which is remarkably tight for two cars in completely different segments fighting it out at the top of the national sales chart. The Ertiga’s CNG variants, priced between Rs 10.76 lakh and Rs 11.83 lakh, remain particularly strong sellers for families looking to cut fuel costs on daily commutes.

4. Maruti Suzuki Fronx – 18,829 Units, Up 31 Per Cent YoY

The Fronx’s crossover styling, comfortable cabin, and fuel-efficient powertrains continue to support demand even though it lacks some popular features. Sales rose 31 per cent YoY to 18,829 units in April. The Fronx rivals the Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger and is priced between Rs 6.85 lakh and Rs 11.84 lakh.

The Fronx started life as essentially a raised Baleno with a different nose, and yet it has built a buyer base that is genuinely its own. The 1.0-litre Boosterjet turbo-petrol variant in particular has a following among buyers who want a punchy petrol engine in a compact crossover body without spending past Rs 12 lakh. A facelift with more features and possibly a hybrid option has been widely discussed and would help the Fronx push further into Venue and Sonet territory.

5. Maruti Suzuki Wagon R – 18,648 Units, Up 39 Per Cent YoY

The Wagon R continued its strong run with sales of 18,648 units, up 39 per cent year-on-year. The hatchback remains popular due to its spacious cabin, ease of driving, and low running costs. It is priced between Rs 4.99 lakh and Rs 6.84 lakh.

There is something quietly remarkable about the Wagon R growing 39 per cent YoY at this stage of its lifecycle. It is not a new car. It does not have the latest features. But in its price bracket, which starts under Rs 5 lakh, there is genuinely very little competition that offers the same space and running cost combination. That is a strong position to be in, and Maruti knows it.

6. Maruti Suzuki Baleno – 18,306 Units, Up 39 Per Cent YoY

The Baleno recorded sales of 18,306 units in April 2026, up 39 per cent over the same month last year. The premium hatchback continues to see steady demand due to its spacious cabin and comfortable ride quality, although the AMT gearbox is not as smooth as a CVT unit. The Baleno rivals the Hyundai i20, Tata Altroz, and Toyota Glanza and is priced between Rs 5.99 lakh and Rs 9.10 lakh.

The Baleno’s 39 per cent growth in April is particularly noteworthy because the Fronx, which is essentially a Baleno in crossover clothing, also grew strongly in the same month. Both cars growing together suggests that the shared platform and engine family are finding buyers across different body style preferences rather than cannibalising each other.

7. Tata Nexon – 18,126 Units, Up 17 Per Cent YoY

The combined sales of the Nexon and Nexon EV increased 17 per cent YoY to 18,126 units. The nameplate remains one of Tata’s volume drivers, supported by multiple petrol, diesel, CNG, and EV powertrain options, along with a feature-rich cabin. It is priced from Rs 7.37 lakh to Rs 14.32 lakh.

The Nexon’s 5-star Bharat NCAP safety rating continues to be one of its strongest selling points, particularly for first-time buyers who have safety as a priority. The EV variant’s contribution within the combined 18,126 unit tally is meaningful, and as charging infrastructure improves across Tier 2 cities, the Nexon EV’s share of the nameplate’s total is likely to grow further.

8. Maruti Suzuki Swift – 17,829 Units, Up 22 Per Cent YoY

The Swift ranked eighth with sales of 17,829 units, up 22 per cent YoY. Its high fuel efficiency, light controls, and easy-to-drive nature continue to support demand, although top variants are priced close to the more premium Baleno hatchback.

The Swift’s 23 per cent month-on-month growth over March 2026 is the number that stands out more than the YoY figure. A movement of that size in a single month for a model that already sells in the upper teens of thousands suggests a deliberate push from Maruti’s dealer network or renewed retail demand following specific variant or colour additions.

9. Hyundai Creta – 15,291 Units, Down 10 Per Cent YoY

The Creta remained India’s bestselling midsize SUV despite a 10 per cent YoY decline in sales to 15,291 units including the Creta Electric. A roomy cabin and long feature list continue to attract buyers, although top variants are expensive and some interior plastics could be better. Priced between Rs 10.79 lakh and Rs 20.05 lakh, the Creta rivals the Kia Seltos, Maruti Grand Vitara, Toyota Hyryder, Honda Elevate, and Tata Sierra.

A 10 per cent YoY decline for the Creta in April 2026 is not a crisis, but it is a pattern worth watching. The Tata Sierra’s arrival in this segment at competitive prices, combined with the Kia Seltos posting 72 per cent YoY growth to 10,566 units in the same month, suggests buyers have more credible alternatives now than they did a year ago.

10. Mahindra Scorpio – 14,719 Units, Down 5 Per Cent YoY

The combined Scorpio Classic and Scorpio N tally stood at 14,719 units, down 5 per cent from the same month last year. The Scorpio nameplate remains popular due to strong engines, rugged character, and off-road ability. However, the third-row seating is cramped and the luggage area is not particularly practical. The Scorpio N rivals the Tata Safari, Hyundai Alcazar, and Mahindra XUV 7XO and is priced from Rs 13.99 lakh to Rs 25.42 lakh.

The Scorpio’s 5 per cent YoY dip in April 2026 keeps it in the top 10 but signals some volume pressure from within Mahindra’s own lineup, where the XUV 7XO and Thar Roxx are both eating into the same buyer pool. Mahindra as a brand had a good April overall, but the Scorpio specifically is facing a more complex internal competitive environment than it did two years ago.

What The April 2026 Top 10 Tells Us

Maruti Suzuki dominated the rankings with six models in the top 10, while Tata Motors had two. A Hyundai and a Mahindra completed the list. That 6-2-1-1 split tells the story of where India’s car market actually sits in April 2026 better than any single headline number. Maruti’s dominance across hatchbacks, sedans, crossovers, and MPVs remains structurally very strong. Tata’s two entries, the Punch and the Nexon, are both growing. And the Creta’s 10 per cent decline, while it holds the segment lead, is a signal that the midsize SUV space is genuinely becoming more competitive.

The broader top 25 list also showed that the Kia Seltos grew 72 per cent YoY to 10,566 units and the Toyota Hyryder surged 96 per cent YoY to 9,115 units, which points to some real movement in the midsize SUV segment below the surface of the top 10.
