Maruti Suzuki records 2,39,646 total units in April 2026 with domestic sales hitting an all-time high of 1,91,122 units and 36 per cent market share

Maruti Suzuki kicked off FY2026-27 with its best-ever monthly sales number. The company sold a total of 2,39,646 units in April 2026, with domestic sales hitting an all-time high of 1,91,122 units. To put that in perspective, that is nearly 4 out of every 10 cars sold in India last month coming from one manufacturer. India’s total passenger vehicle retail sales hit a record 4,07,355 units in April 2026, up 12.21 per cent YoY, with Maruti holding a 36 per cent market share. Wikipediatatamotors

The numbers are big, but the story inside the numbers is even more interesting. A sedan outsold every SUV in the country. A 25-year-old hatchback grew 39 per cent year-on-year. And a brand that many thought was slow to change posted its highest-ever monthly volume. Here is the full picture.

Breaking down the sales figures, the mini segment which includes Alto and S-Presso saw sales of 16,066 units, a significant jump from 6,332 units in April 2025. The compact and mid-size segment featuring Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Swift, and Wagon R achieved 80,659 units, up from 61,912 units in the same month last year. The utility vehicle segment including Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, Grand Vitara, and e Vitara contributed 77,892 units, compared to 59,022 units in April 2025. The van segment represented by the Eeco saw sales of 13,087 units, rising from 11,438 units the previous year. Export sales stood at 40,054 units, up sharply from 27,911 units in April 2025. Every single segment posted YoY growth. That kind of across-the-board performance does not happen by accident. It reflects a product portfolio that is well spread across price points, a dealer network that covers more of India than any other brand, and a cost of ownership equation that continues to make Maruti the default choice for a very large chunk of Indian car buyers.

Dzire: A Sedan That Beat Every SUV In India

The single most talked-about data point from Maruti Suzuki’s April 2026 sales report is the Dzire finishing as India’s best-selling passenger vehicle for the month. The Dzire topped the April 2026 charts with 23,580 units, up 39 per cent from 16,996 units in April 2025, making it the best-selling passenger vehicle in the country by a big margin.

This matters because the Indian car market has spent the last five years moving decisively toward SUVs. Sedans have been shrinking as a category. The Honda City lost its volume crown. The Ciaz was discontinued. And yet here is the Dzire, a sub-Rs 10 lakh compact sedan, outselling every SUV in India in April 2026. The reasons are straightforward: strong fleet demand, high fuel efficiency, and a well-balanced ride and handling setup. The Dzire is priced between Rs 6.26 lakh and Rs 9.31 lakh ex-showroom, and with CNG variants returning 33.73 km per kg, the running cost argument for fleet operators is essentially unanswerable.

Fronx, Wagon R And Baleno: Three Models, One Pattern

Three of Maruti’s biggest volume contributors outside the Dzire posted nearly identical YoY growth in April 2026, and that consistency is worth paying attention to. The Fronx sold 18,829 units with a 31 per cent YoY rise and 21 per cent MoM growth. The Wagon R followed with 18,648 units, up 39 per cent YoY. The Baleno recorded 18,306 units, also up 39 per cent YoY with 12 per cent monthly growth.

The Fronx’s April performance is particularly notable. Its crossover styling, comfortable cabin, and fuel-efficient powertrains continue to support demand even though it lacks some popular features found in rivals. It is priced between Rs 6.85 lakh and Rs 11.84 lakh. For a car that started life as essentially a Baleno in SUV clothing, it has built a buyer base that is genuinely independent of its donor platform.

The Wagon R’s 39 per cent YoY jump is quietly one of the more remarkable numbers in this month’s data. This is a hatchback that has been on sale for years with relatively limited updates, yet it continues to grow year-on-year at rates that most newly launched cars would be happy to match. Its spacious cabin, ease of driving, and low running costs keep it relevant, and it is priced between Rs 4.99 lakh and Rs 6.84 lakh, a price bracket where Maruti has almost no serious competition.

Ertiga Holds Strong, Swift Posts A 23 Per Cent MoM Jump

The Ertiga posted sales of 19,063 units in April 2026, growing 21 per cent YoY and 12 per cent MoM. It held its position as India’s best-selling MPV for the month, finishing just 44 units behind the Tata Punch in the national overall rankings. Priced from Rs 8.80 lakh to Rs 13.26 lakh, the Ertiga competes against the Kia Carens and Toyota Rumion. Neither rival has come close to matching its volumes on a consistent basis.

The Swift had a particularly strong April, selling 17,829 units with 22 per cent YoY and 23 per cent MoM growth. A 23 per cent month-on-month jump for a model that already sells in the high tens of thousands is not a small movement. It suggests either a meaningful inventory push from Maruti’s dealer network in April or renewed retail demand following the model’s refreshed positioning against rivals.

Brezza Slips, XL6 Continues To Struggle

Not every Maruti Suzuki model had a good month in April 2026. The Brezza declined 17 per cent YoY to 14,124 units, and the XL6 fell 15 per cent YoY and 11 per cent MoM. The Grand Vitara held relatively steady at 7,718 units with 8 per cent annual growth.

The Brezza’s 17 per cent YoY decline is the one number in this report that stands out as a genuine concern. The compact SUV segment is currently the most competitive space in Indian automotive, with the Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, and Mahindra XUV 3XO all fighting hard for the same buyer. The Brezza needs a product response, and reports of a facelift with a turbo-petrol engine have been circulating for a while. April’s sales data adds urgency to that timeline.

Alto’s 94 Per Cent Jump Is The Real Surprise

Buried in the mini segment numbers is a figure that deserves more attention. The Maruti Suzuki Alto posted a 94 per cent year-on-year jump to 10,856 units in April 2026, which was one of the two highest YoY growth figures in the top 25 cars nationally for the month. That kind of growth from an entry-level hatchback suggests the GST reduction on sub-4-metre vehicles, along with renewed first-time buyer activity, is filtering through clearly at the absolute bottom of the market. Entry-level volume is a strong indicator of new buyer additions to the category, and for Maruti, those new buyers will overwhelmingly choose Maruti again for their next car.

Exports: 40,054 Units, Up 43 Per Cent YoY

Export sales grew to 40,054 units in April 2026 from 27,911 units in April 2025, a 43 per cent year-on-year increase. Over the full FY2026, Maruti Suzuki sold 24,22,713 units in total, up from 22,34,266 units in FY2025, with exports accounting for 4,47,774 units. The brand firmly established itself as India’s largest vehicle exporter. The April 2026 export number continues that momentum into the new financial year. WikipediaAutocar India

What Maruti Suzuki’s April 2026 Numbers Actually Mean

The 35 per cent domestic YoY growth and the all-time high monthly sales volume are strong data points, but the more important read from April 2026 is what they reveal about the Indian car market’s structure. Maruti’s strength is not concentrated in one segment or one price point. The Dzire wins the overall chart. The Wagon R and Baleno hold the premium hatchback space. The Fronx and Ertiga cover compact crossover and MPV buyers. The Alto is growing again at the entry level. That spread is why Maruti’s market share stays above 36 per cent even in a market where competition from Tata, Hyundai, Mahindra, and Kia has genuinely intensified.

The Brezza and XL6 are the two areas that need attention. Every other model in the lineup posted positive YoY numbers in April, which makes the Brezza’s slide considerably more visible by contrast.
